A History Of Luxury
The iconic BMW 3 Series is an entry level luxury vehicle first introduced by the German automaker BMW in 1975. Since then, the BMW 3 Series has seen many redesigns and upgrades and is currently in its 6th generation. The first generation 3 series was only available as a 2-door sedan, but since then it has upgraded to include a 4-door sedan, 2-door convertible, 2-door coupe, and 5-door Touring models. The 3 Series enjoys a longstanding reputation for outstanding driving dynamics, handling, quality, and prestige. Drivers have long considered it the standard against which all other luxury sedans must compete.
Appearance Over Time
In the 1970s, BMW faced a very difficult task. It needed to replace the 2002 coupe, and the company knew that the 3 Series had to embody the spirit of the company's prized 2002. The first generation 3 series was designated the E21. It rolled off assembly lines in May, 1975 as the 320i. It was larger than the 2002 coupe and featured a wheelbase that was 2.5 inches longer than the 2002, and a greater size that made it more stable but just as agile. It carried over styling elements from the 2002 including a forward-leaning grille, low beltline and clipped rear windows. The second generation featured styling benefits over the previous generation, which included more aerodynamic curves, headlights that were more integrated with the grille, and a more sloped hood which gave the vehicle a sportier look.
The third generation gave rise to the compact coupes and convertibles. In addition to engine upgrades, it featured sleek detailing that improved aerodynamics and also reduced cabin noise. With the fourth generation, BMW re-introduced the xDrive® all-wheel drive system after a break of 18 years. It featured an upgraded interior, new bold lines, and a more aerodynamic and sportier look. It was available in sedan, coupe, convertible, and wagon models. The fifth generation saw the introduction of the 335i 3 Series model equipped with a turbocharged petrol engine. Run flat tires were also introduced, doing away with the spare tire. Currently in its sixth generation, the BMW 3 Series is available in sedan, wagon and 5-door Gran Turismo models. The coupe and convertible are now sold as the BMW 4 Series. The entire 3 Series lineup now uses turbocharged engines.
The first BMW 3 Series was equipped with a 2.0-liter Bosch K-Jetronic fuel-injected engine that put out 110 horsepower, and it met emissions regulations without the need of a catalytic converter. In 1980 the engine shrank to 1.8-liters although horsepower decreased by 10, it made up for it with the adoption of a five-speed manual transmission. In 1984, BMW upgraded the engine to a 2.7-liter inline-6 engine that put out 121 horsepower. In 1992, BMW had upgraded the engine to increase horsepower and driving dynamics. The 3 Series was now equipped with a 189 horsepower engine that could reach 60 mph in just 6.9 seconds.
In 1996, BMW replaced the engine with a 2.8-liter inline-6 engine that jumped up to 190 horsepower, and in 325i models were renamed 328i models. In 2001, the 2.5-liter engine was modified to boost its output to 184 horsepower, while the 2.8-liter engine was replaced with a 3.0-liter engine that put out 225 horsepower. Fast forward to its current generation, and you will note the wide assortment of engine options available. Drivers can choose from options such as a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 rated at 180 horsepower, a 2.0-liter turbocharged diesel inline-4, 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 that puts out 300 horsepower, and a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 in the M3 rated at 425 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque.
